Man dies in drowning at Smith Mountain Lake


MONETA, VA – A man died in a drowning accident at Smith Mountain Lake on Monday morning, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.


The Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County Public Safety and Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Rescue responded to the lake near the 400 block of Channelview Drive in Moneta at around 9:54 a.m. for the incident.


Authorities say they found an unconscious man in the water near a dock.


Despite extensive life saving measures, the man was pronounced dead, according to officials.

The victim’s body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office.


The Sheriff’s Office said there does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances at this time.

“The Office of the Sheriff expresses our deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and friends during this tragic time. Out of respect for the family, the victim’s name will be withheld while other family members are being notified,” Public Information Officer Sergeant Megan Huston wrote in a press release.


This investigation will remain active pending official autopsy results.
