Man dead, woman hospitalized for life-threatening injuries after crash


FRANKLIN COUNTY, VA – A man is dead and a woman was injured after a crash in Franklin County early Monday morning.


The crash occurred around 6:20 a.m. on Old Franklin Turnpike east of Novelty Road.


A 1998 Chevrolet Suburban was going east on Old Franklin Turnpike when it crossed the centerline and hit a 2021 Hyundai Sonata, which was going west, according to a Virginia State Police press release.


State Police said Ashley Hodges, 38, of Union Hall, was driving the Chevrolet and was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.


Hodges was flown by helicopter to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for life-threatening injuries.


The driver of the Hyundai, Kyle Simino, 22, of Wirtz, also was not wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene, police said.


Charges are currently pending.


The Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team assisted.


The crash investigation is ongoing.
