PATRICK COUNTY, VA – A Blacksburg man has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies following a breaking and entering attempt.

Deputies responded shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday to the area of Dan River Grocery in Ararat regarding a call of a suspicious person.

Upon arrival, the deputies determined that someone had attempted to break in to the store, according to Sheriff Dan Smith.

One of the deputies found 30-year-old Ronald Scott Richards Jr. walking near Homeplace Road and after questioning Richards, it was determined that he was the suspect.

According to the Sheriff, Richards started to fight with the deputy while the deputy tied to arrest him.

During the altercation, the deputy lost control of his metal flashlight, Richards grabbed the flashlight and tried to strike the deputy with it while both men were on the ground, Smith said.

The sheriff says the deputy punched Richards multiple times in order to gain compliance and ultimately handcuff him.

After being transported to the jail, Richards allegedly punched another deputy in the neck during the booking process.

He has been charged with two counts of assaulting a law enforcement officer, attempted breaking and entering, and destruction of property.

Authorities say all three men involved received minor injuries that did not require outside medical attention.

Richards is being held without bail in the Patrick County Jail.
