Man charged with attempted murder after dousing brother with kerosene, trying to ignite it

PATRICK COUNTY, VA – A Patrick Springs man was arrested late Friday night after an altercation with his brother, according to Patrick County Sheriff Dan Smith.

Larry Darnell Tatum, 69, is charged with attempted murder and is being held without bail in the Patrick County Jail.

The incident began when Master Deputy Matthew Rorrer responded to Tatum's residence on Providence Drive in reference to a 911 disturbance call that was received.

Upon arrival, Rorrer determined through his initial investigation that Larry Tatum allegedly poured kerosene on his brother, Rickie Tatum, 64, and made attempts to ignite the kerosene.

Smith stated that Larry Tatum was "unsuccessful in his efforts, thankfully."

Rickie Tatum was uninjured, according to the sheriff.

The investigation is continuing and anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Lieutenant Steve Austin or Investigator Tennille Jessup at 276-694-3161.
