On November 1, 2020, at 3:43 am, the Martinsville-Henry County 911 center received a call regarding an individual who had been shot at 73 Rose Lane, Martinsville, VA. Deputies responded to Rose Lane and were unable to locate anyone who had been shot. It was determined that the victim had been placed into a vehicle and transported to the SOVAH Health Martinsville E.R.
The victim, Jayland Jovan Sandoval Gonzalez, 23, of Martinsville, VA, was pronounced dead at SOVAH Health Martinsville. Through the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the victim was attending a large party at 73 Rose Lane. Witnesses reported that an argument ensued between Gonzalez and Demario Devonte Clark, 27, of Martinsville, VA. During the altercation, Clark shot Gonzalez and fled the scene.
Gonzalez suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. He was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia, where an autopsy will be performed.
Demario Devonte Clark has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Clark is currently held in the Henry County Jail without bond.
