Local residents are creating a gospel choir for everyone

MARTINSVILLE – Two local residents are coming together to create Haven of Praise, a community gospel choir.

Alyssa Prillaman and Wesley Childress are pioneering the choir and are inviting members of the community to join.

"Our goal is to create an intergenerational, multiracial musical community in which everyone has a safe place to sing and praise," Prillaman said.

I always had the thrill and drive to learn how to play the piano. I didn't have the outlets to help me. I really had to pick it up on my own, so that struggle, it wasn't cool, but when I knew that I have people around me who have the same thrill and drive makes it a lot easier," Childress stated.

Those who are interested in joining are invited to come to the rehearsal event Thursday at 7 PM at 725 Beechnut Lane in Martinsville.

"I just graduated from Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and I came back here wanting to continue music and wanting to continue creating and leaving some sort of legacy in the Martinsville-Henry County community through music, through family, through community," Prillaman added.

Haven of Praise is a sponsored ensemble of Da Capo VA.
