Joyce Staples to Highlight Civic Duty at Founders Day Event

Joyce Staples

The Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society will host its annual Founders Day celebration on Sunday, January 19, 2024, at 3:00 P.M. at the Historic Henry County Courthouse.

This year’s event will spotlight civic organizations and their contributions to the community.

The event will feature Joyce Staples as the keynote speaker. Staples, a retired English professor from Patrick & Henry Community College, will address the importance of civic duty inspired by the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Her extensive involvement in the community includes roles as board chair of the Fayette Area Historical Initiative, board secretary of the Trinity Presbyterian Church Foundation, and membership in organizations such as the Virginia Museum of Natural History Foundation and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.

Following Staples’ address, a lineup of distinguished speakers representing local civic groups will share their insights:

  • Martha Woody, Past President of Altrusa International of Martinsville and Henry County

  • Brittany Scott, President of the Charity League of Martinsville & Henry County

  • Ralph Lawson, Past President of the Martinsville Exchange Club

  • Graves Anthony, Member of the Bassett Kiwanis Club

  • Lori Floyd, President of the Martinsville-Henry County Lions Club

  • Brad Kinkema, President of the Martinsville-Henry County Rotary Club

  • Charlie Bowman, District Secretary of Ruritan National

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with participating civic groups at informational tables showcasing artifacts, membership details, and the history of their organizations.

Former and current members are encouraged to bring or wear items representing their affiliations.

John Phillips, president of the Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society, highlighted the significance of this year’s theme. “The Historical Society celebrates annually those who helped to create and sustain our area on Founders Day.

This year we recognize those serving our community. Joyce Staples will first provide a lesson on why we should serve, followed by presentations by those actually serving.”

The event is free and open to the public. The Historic Henry County Courthouse is fully handicapped accessible. Additionally, the Martinsville-Henry County Heritage Museum will be open for visitors following the program.

Join the Historical Society in honoring the individuals and organizations that embody the spirit of service and community in Martinsville and Henry County.
