Investigators Work to Identify Victim of Fatal Henry County House Fire

BASSETT, Va. — Investigators are working to identify the victim of a fatal house fire that occurred early Monday morning in Henry County.
The fire broke out in the early hours of Monday, December 15, in the 200 block of Graceland Drive in Bassett.
Emergency crews responded to reports of a residential structure fire, where one person was later found deceased inside the home.
According to Fire Marshal Kiah Cooper, the victim’s remains have been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for identification.
Authorities are now coordinating with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office in Florida to obtain a DNA sample from the victim’s closest next of kin for comparison.
Cooper said the identification process could take between seven and ten days to complete.
The investigation determined that the fire originated in the rear section of the residence. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire departments from Bassett, Collinsville, and Patrick Henry responded to the scene and assisted in suppression efforts.
Officials have not released the identity of the victim pending confirmation.
