Rockingham County, N.C. —(BTW21) Two separate investigations were launched in March by the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office involving staff members at McMichael High School, following reports of inappropriate conduct with students.

The investigations resulted in criminal charges for one employee, while clearing another of any wrongdoing.

On March 21, 2025, the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office received information from a School Resource Officer regarding potential inappropriate conduct and communication between a custodian at McMichael High School and students. An investigation was immediately launched in coordination with the Rockingham County District Attorney’s Office.

As a result, 28-year-old Gloria Holloway was charged with:

  • One count of Felony Disseminate Obscenity to a Juvenile for allegedly sending obscene messages to a student.

  • One count of Misdemeanor Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor for reportedly helping a student obtain and use a vaping device.

Holloway was relieved of her position by the Rockingham County School System shortly after the allegations surfaced. She was arrested, appeared before a Magistrate, and received a $1,000 unsecured bond. She is scheduled to appear in District Court on April 24, 2025.

Just days later, on March 25, 2025, the Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Rockingham County School Superintendent of another concern — this time involving a possible inappropriate relationship or correspondence between 56-year-old Andrew Mercer, Director of the school’s ROTC program, and a student.

Mercer was suspended from his role pending an investigation.

However, after a thorough review, authorities concluded that no criminal conduct had taken place according to North Carolina state law.

Mercer's suspension and the subsequent actions will now be handled internally by the school system.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that the two incidents are unrelated and were investigated independently.

“We want to thank the Rockingham County School System and the District Attorney’s Office for their cooperation and support throughout these investigations,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

The school system has not released additional information regarding internal disciplinary actions or changes following the incidents.
