Inmate Found Dead at Rockingham County Detention Facility

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. (BTW21) — Authorities have launched an investigation into the death of an inmate at the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility following an incident that occurred last month.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, on the morning of June 6, 2025, a detention officer discovered a male inmate unresponsive during routine feeding rounds shortly before 6:30 a.m. Emergency personnel were immediately called to the scene, and life-saving measures were initiated by both detention staff and responders.
Despite those efforts, the 39-year-old white male inmate was pronounced deceased.
As is standard procedure in custodial deaths, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI)Â has been called in to conduct a full and independent investigation.
The inmate’s identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin and further investigative findings.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released any information regarding possible causes of death, but officials confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
