Inmate died from medical emergency, authorities say

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, NC – The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office said an inmate in the Rockingham County Detention Facility has died as a result of a medical emergency.

Authorities said a female arrived at the detention facility around 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, and was placed in an observation cell to be monitored by officers and medical staff.

Around 7:40 a.m, the inmate developed an apparent medical emergency and collapsed in her cell, according to the sheriff's office.

Officers, medical staff and Rockingham County Emergency Services provided CPR and other life-saving efforts to the inmate.

While crews were rendering this aid, she passed away as a result of her medical emergency, authorities said.

The sheriff's office said she showed no signs of distress before collapsing in the cell.

Foul play is not suspected in the death.

At the request of Sheriff Sam Page, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been contacted and will perform a follow-up investigation per standard procedure.

The name of the inmate is not being released at this time as the next of kin are still being notified.
