Henry County Sheriff's Office Makes Arrest in Dollar General Shooting Investigation

Bassett, VA – The Henry County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in connection with the shooting that took place outside the Dollar General store on Stones Dairy Road in Bassett, Virginia, on October 6, 2025.


The suspect, 19-year-old Charles Edward Mills, turned himself in to authorities at approximately 9:30 p.m. on October 7, 2025.


Mills is facing serious charges following the incident, which left two individuals wounded.


He was arrested without incident and is currently being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.


Charges:

  • Malicious Wounding (2 counts)

  • Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony (2 counts)

  • Attempted Robbery


The shooting occurred in the parking lot on the side of the Dollar General building, away from the main shopping entrance.


According to investigators, gunfire was exchanged between the two victims and at least one other suspect, though it remains unclear whether Mills was acting alone.


Sheriff Wayne Davis praised the diligent work of his team: "Our investigators worked tirelessly through the night following up on leads and processing evidence. Thanks to their dedication — and the cooperation of our community — a suspect is now in custody. We remain committed to holding everyone involved accountable and ensuring the safety of our citizens."


The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing, and authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.
