HENRY COUNTY, Va. (BTW21) — Authorities are investigating a homicide after the body of an unidentified man was discovered early Tuesday morning along Lee's Ridge Road in Henry County.
The discovery was made after the Martinsville-Henry County 911 Center received a call reporting the presence of a body in the 500 block of Lee’s Ridge Road.
Deputies responded to the scene and found the victim lying on the shoulder of the rural roadway. The Henry County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the man had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Sheriff Wayne Davis stated that investigators believe the victim had been deceased since late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
“This is a tragic case, and it’s clear that someone has lost their life in a senseless act of violence,” Davis said. “Our focus right now is on identifying the victim and determining who is responsible for this crime.”
The discovery of an unidentified body in a remote area presents unique challenges for investigators, according to Sheriff Davis. "Every major case has its own set of challenges, and most certainly when you find a set of remains with no identification on the side of a rural highway, that presents a whole other set of challenges," he said. "But we have an investigative team here that's second to none as far as equipment, training, and dedication to the job, and we're confident they'll make progress as necessary."
Authorities have not released any additional details about the victim, and the investigation is ongoing.
At this time, there are no known suspects, and law enforcement is working diligently to gather evidence and piece together the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
Sheriff Davis urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist with the investigation.
