Franklin County Authorities Investigate Drowning Death in Union Hall

Franklin County, VA (BTW21) — A tragic incident unfolded Thursday evening after a 911 call was placed to the Franklin County Communications Center around 7:00 p.m., reporting a missing person in the Beech Drive area of Union Hall near Smith Mountain Lake.


Emergency responders from multiple agencies—including the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Franklin County Public Safety, Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire Rescue, Virginia Conservation Police, and the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office—conducted an extensive search of the area.


Tragically, during the search, responders located a body in the water.


The victim was removed from the lake and later pronounced deceased at the scene.


The deceased has been identified as 75-year-old Tom Stenson of McGaheysville, Virginia.


His body has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Authorities say the investigation remains active, but at this time, there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.


Further details will be released pending the results of the medical examination.
