FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (BTW21) — A Franklin County man was arrested on Monday, October 13, 2025, after a firearm was discovered inside his child's backpack at a local daycare center.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., staff at the private daycare contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office after finding the weapon.
Deputies quickly responded to the scene to investigate the matter.
According to investigators, Dylan Scott Whorley, 27, of Bedford, had inadvertently placed the firearm in his child’s backpack that morning while trying to transport it to his vehicle.

One felony count of Firearm Possession on School Property
One misdemeanor count of Allowing Access to Firearms by Children
He is currently being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail as he awaits court proceedings.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office praised the daycare staff for their swift actions in reporting the incident, ensuring the safety of both the children and staff at the facility.
The incident is still under investigation, and authorities are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the event.
