Fatal Motorcycle Crash Under Investigation in Henry County

HENRY COUNTY, Va. – (BTW21) Virginia State Police are investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred last Wednesday evening in Henry County and has since resulted in a fatality.
The crash happened on June 18 at approximately 8:20 p.m. along A.L. Philpott Highway, just east of G.W. Drive.
According to authorities, a 2018 Acura MDX was making a left turn out of a crossover and heading east on the highway when it was struck from behind by a 2011 Honda CBR 1000RR motorcycle traveling in the same direction.
Police said the motorcycle was exceeding the speed limit at the time of the collision.
The motorcyclist, identified as James William Johns, 58, of Martinsville, was wearing a helmet but sustained serious injuries in the crash. He was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on June 22, 2025.
The driver of the Acura was not injured in the incident, and no charges are currently pending.
The Virginia State Police confirmed that the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
This marks another tragic reminder of the risks associated with excessive speed on Virginia’s roadways.
