UPDATE: 17-year-old suspect of Martinsville fatal shooting turns himself in

MARTINSVILLE – The Henry County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the homicide of Eric Montequilla Barksdale, 32, of 1648 Rivermont Heights Rd., Martinsville. The homicide occurred at 1648 Rivermont Heights Rd., Martinsville, VA on February 2, 2019.  Through the course of the investigation it was determined that an argument ensued between the victim, Eric Barksdale, and a male juvenile (17 years of age).  The victim and juvenile went outside where the juvenile shot Barksdale then fled on foot.

The 17 year-old male juvenile was charged with 2nd degree murder (felony), use of a firearm during the commission of a felony (felony) and reckless handling of a firearm (misdemeanor).

The juvenile turned himself in at the Henry County Sheriff’s Office on February 5, 2019.  He is currently being held in the W.W. Moore, Jr. Juvenile Detention Home located in Danville, VA.

This investigation is ongoing and anyone having information regarding this homicide is asked to contact the Henry County Sheriff’s Office at 276-638-8751 or Crimestoppers at 63-CRIME (632-7463).  The Crimestoppers Program offers rewards up to $2500.00 for information related to crime.  The nature of the crime and the substance of the information determine the amount of reward paid.


SUNDAY UPDATE

MARTINSVILLE – Saturday at 10:54 PM, the Martinsville-Henry County 9-1-1 center received a call in regards to an individual who had been shot outside of a home located at 1648 Rivermont Heights Road in Martinsville.

Deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, upon their arrival the occupant of the home was located on the front porch suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.  Deputies performed CPR on the victim until Martinsville Fire & EMS personnel arrived.  The victim was transported to SOVAH Health Martinsville where he was pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Eric Montequilla Barksdale, 32, of 1648 Rivermont Heights Rd., Martinsville.  An autopsy will be performed at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the Western District of Virginia.

Through the course of the investigation it was determined that an argument ensued between the victim, Eric Barksdale, and a male juvenile (17 years of age).  The victim and juvenile went outside where the juvenile shot Barksdale then fled on foot.

There are outstanding charges on the 17 year-old male juvenile for 2nd degree murder, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony and reckless handling of a firearm. 


ORIGINAL STORY

MARTINSVILLE – Police are searching for a black male wearing a grey sweatshirt and black jeans in connection to a shooting.

Around 11 PM Saturday, a 32-year-old black male was shot in the chest on Rivermont Heights Road. The shooter then fled on foot towards Memorial Boulevard. The gun shot wound victim was transported to SOVAH Health by Martinsville Fire and EMS. His condition is unknown.
