ROANOKE COUNTY, VA – Police are investigating after an inmate from Martinsville died Sunday morning at the Western Virginia Regional Jail.
38-year-old Joseph Evan Osbourne was found unresponsive in his cell, according to jail officials.
Medical and security staff initiated life-saving measures, including CPR, while Roanoke County Fire-EMS personnel were dispatched to the jail and took over.
Authorities said Osbourne was pronounced dead at 7:25 a.m.
The Roanoke County Police Department has initiated an investigation and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke will perform an autopsy.
Officials said all information indicates the death was due to natural causes and there is no evidence to suggest it is connected to COVID-19.
Osbourne was committed to the jail on March 8 and was awaiting trial for a fraud charge in Salem, a probation violation and a narcotics charge in Danville, and a narcotics charge in Martinsville.
