FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (BTW21) — A swift response by first responders early Tuesday morning likely saved a life after floodwaters threatened to carry away a vehicle with a person trapped inside.

According to officials, the Callaway Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched around 1:00 a.m. to the 6600 block of Callaway Road, where a vehicle had become stranded in high water following recent heavy rains.

The driver was reportedly trapped inside, with water rising rapidly to the doors.

Upon arrival, rescue crews quickly located the vehicle and launched a swift operation to extract the individual.

Just moments after the successful rescue, the vehicle was swept away by the current.

Franklin County Fire & EMS evaluated the person on the scene, and no injuries were reported.

Officials credited the successful rescue to strong coordination between multiple agencies, including the Standing Watch – Office of the Sheriff, Franklin County, and telecommunications dispatchers who played a key role in pinpointing the vehicle's location.

“This rescue shows the power of teamwork across agencies to save lives,” officials said in a statement. “We’re thankful for the quick response and teamwork of all personnel — this could have had a much different outcome.”

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution as several roadways remain submerged and more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
