BEDFORD, Va. (BTW21) — A Romanian citizen has been arrested after credit card skimmers were found at multiple Wal-Mart stores across the East Coast, including locations in Central Virginia.
The arrest follows a detailed investigation that led law enforcement to identify the suspect, Florin Doroiman, as the person responsible for the skimming devices that had been placed in several Wal-Mart stores.
The incidents in the Bedford area began on February 26 when the Bedford Police Department (BPD) received a report of a credit card skimming device discovered at the Wal-Mart in Bedford.
The device was found by store personnel who had been actively checking the credit card kiosks for skimming equipment.
Upon learning of the device, the BPD launched an investigation and began tracing the skimming activity.
The trail led investigators to a male suspect, who was found to have placed similar skimming devices at several other Wal-Mart locations across Virginia and up the East Coast. Working with Wal-Mart Investigations, the U.S. Secret Service, as well as law enforcement from Lynchburg, Chesterfield County, and BPD, the agencies shared evidence and coordinated efforts to locate the suspect.
According to BPD, the suspect was arrested without incident in the Richmond area. The suspect was identified as Florin Doroiman, a citizen of Romania.
Doroiman is facing charges related to credit card fraud, although official charges are still pending in Bedford.
Authorities are urging anyone who shopped at the Bedford Wal-Mart between 5:30 p.m. on February 25 and 9 a.m. on February 26 to be aware that they may have been affected by the skimming device.
The skimming device was discovered at Register 11 during that timeframe.
If you used a credit or debit card at that register, BPD advises you to contact Detective Lawhorne at 540-587-6116 to report any suspicious activity.
BPD also thanked the various agencies that worked together on the investigation, leading to the swift identification and arrest of the suspect.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are reminding shoppers to always be vigilant when using credit or debit cards, especially at self-checkout kiosks, where skimming devices are commonly placed.
