City of Martinsville declares local emergency due to COVID-19 concerns

MARTINSVILLE, VA – On Tuesday, Martinsville Mayor Kathy Lawson declared a local emergency, enabling the city to marshal all available recourses and efforts to combat the pandemic.

“Although cases of the Coronavirus in Virginia have gone up, there are currently no known cases in the Martinsville-Henry County area,” Human Resources Director Travis Hodge said.

The City of Martinsville has canceled all non-essential events through April 13.

By court order, all visitors to city hall will be screened for fever, and asked a series of questions regarding travel and any heath symptoms.

All essential city services including police, fire and EMS, utility services, and city hall will stay open.

City council will hold its meeting on Tuesday, March 24, but city residents are urged to view it through MGTV-22, news media, or YouTube.

To limit physical contact, city residents should utilize online resources for payments, permit applications and other services.
