CEO of Failed Patrick County Hospital Bid Flees U.S., Named in Federal Indictments
(BTW21) The embattled CEO behind a failed effort to reopen the shuttered hospital in Patrick County has reportedly fled the country amid mounting legal troubles, including a sweeping federal indictment in Illinois.
Sameer Suhail, CEO of Chicago-based Foresight Health, which had promised to revive the Patrick County hospital, was previously indicted in 2023 on federal charges connected to an alleged scheme to embezzle more than $15 million from a Chicago hospital between 2018 and 2022.
Court documents show Suhail faces six counts of wire fraud, six counts of aiding and abetting embezzlement, and two counts of money laundering.
According to investigative reporting by Block Club Chicago, Suhail and an indicted associate have since left the United States and are currently believed to be working in Dubai.
A third individual involved in the case was apprehended by federal agents as she was attempting to board a flight to Dubai.
Authorities reportedly stopped the aircraft before it could take off.
Last week, federal prosecutors in Illinois unsealed a new round of charges, although Suhail himself did not face any additional indictments.
He is, however, named in the filings. Prosecutors allege that a former CEO of a Chicago hospital accepted over $769,000 in bribes in exchange for steering multimillion-dollar contracts to companies owned by Suhail.
Despite serious allegations, Suhail continues to maintain a public image online as a “distinguished medical professional” and “globally recognized leader,” now promoting cosmetic surgery services in Dubai.
In 2021, Suhail’s company Foresight Health entered the local spotlight when it announced plans to purchase and reopen the hospital in Patrick County, which closed in 2017.
However, the company failed to follow through, leaving the community without a functioning medical center.
The property has since been acquired by a Tennessee-based health care provider, which is currently working toward reopening the hospital and restoring critical health services to the region.
Local leaders have expressed frustration over the false hopes generated by Foresight’s failed bid.
“This community was misled and left in limbo for too long,” said one official familiar with the situation. “We’re now focused on moving forward with partners who are truly committed to Patrick County.”
Federal authorities have not announced whether they will seek Suhail’s extradition.
