Additional charges have been filed in the tragic death of an 8-year-old child in Franklin County.
On Wednesday, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office announced that the child’s stepmother, Mary Marie Everson, has been charged with second-degree murder following the fatal incident on Saturday, February 8.
Previously, Mary Everson had been charged with one felony count of child abuse and neglect resulting in serious injuries.
She is currently being held without bond, pending further court proceedings.
Emergency responders were called to a residence in the 100 block of Circle View Street in Rocky Mount on the morning of February 8, where the child was pronounced dead.
Following an initial investigation, both Mary Everson and the child’s father, Michael Eugene Everson, were arrested.
Michael Everson faces a felony charge of child abuse and neglect resulting in serious injuries.
The child’s body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for an autopsy, and the investigation is still ongoing.
Authorities have not indicated whether additional charges are expected against Michael Everson at this time.
