Botetourt County, VA – Investigation Underway Following Officer-Involved Shooting

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. —(BTW21) The Virginia State Police, Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI), Salem Division, is conducting an ongoing investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning, June 25, 2025, at the request of Botetourt County Sheriff Matt Ward.
At approximately 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, deputies responded to a distressing 911 call from a male subject claiming that he had killed his father.
Upon arrival at a residence on High Ridge Circle in Troutville, deputies encountered the male suspect outside the home.
During the encounter, law enforcement officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect.
A subsequent search inside the residence revealed the deceased body of Hugh Gerard McCaul, 58, of Troutville, Va.
The deceased was identified as the father of the male subject involved in the incident. A firearm was also recovered from the scene.
The suspect has been identified as Liam Gerald McCaul, 23, of Nashville, Tenn. Authorities did not report any injuries to deputies during the confrontation.
As is standard procedure for incidents of this nature, the deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation.
Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office is cooperating fully with the Virginia State Police in the probe.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances leading to the shooting.
The Virginia State Police urges anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
Sheriff Ward expressed his condolences to the family and noted that the situation remains under thorough investigation.
