Bassett man driving wrong way on Route 58 Bypass killed in head-on crash

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA – A driver is dead after he struck an SUV head-on while going the wrong direction in Pittsylvania County.


The crash occurred Thursday at 11:10 p.m. on Route 58 Bypass, less than a mile south of Oakridge Farms Road.


According to Virginia State Police, a 2008 Honda Civic was traveling south in the northbound lanes of the Route 58 Bypass when it hit a 2005 GMC Yukon head-on.


51-year-old Joaquin B. Galvan, of Bassett, was driving the Honda and died at the scene.


State police say the GMC driver and a female passenger in the Honda were transported to Sovah Health in Danville for treatment of serious injuries.


Authorities say alcohol was found inside of the Honda.


The state police crash reconstruction team is assisting with the ongoing crash investigation.
