BEDFORD, Va. (BTW21) — Authorities in Bedford are searching for a man who escaped from federal custody Monday evening while being transported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The Bedford Police Department said they were notified around 5 p.m. on October 27 that a male detainee had fled custody near the Arby’s restaurant on the Lynchburg Salem Turnpike.

The escaped individual has been identified as 22-year-old Kelvin Josue Reyes Bonilla.

According to police, Bonilla had previously been convicted of a misdemeanor in Campbell County and was in ICE custody at the time of the escape.

Officers from several law enforcement agencies immediately responded to assist in the search, but as of Monday night, Bonilla remained at large.

Police described Bonilla as wearing a red shirt, camouflage gym shorts, black socks, and inmate slides at the time he escaped.

He was also reported to be wearing handcuffs and a belly chain.

Authorities are urging anyone who sees Bonilla or has information about his location to contact the Bedford Police Department immediately.

Law enforcement officials say the search remains active and are asking residents in the area to stay alert and report any suspicious activity.
