SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, VA – A Roanoke man drowned at Smith Mountain Lake on Monday, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities got a call to report a missing person last seen around the Smith Mountain Lake area at around 10:45 a.m.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to the area to search for the person and says it found 25-year-old Jerson Martinez in the water.
With assistance from Smith Mountain Lake Marine Fire-Rescue and Franklin County Public Safety, Martinez was removed from the water and he was pronounced dead.
His body was taken to the medical examiner’s office.
“There does not appear to be any suspicious circumstances at this time. The Office of the Sheriff expresses our deepest sympathies to the victim’s family and friends during this tragic time,” the Sheriff’s Office's Public Information Officer Sergeant Megan Huston wrote in a press release.
This investigation will remain active pending official autopsy results.
