PHCC hires Bassett native as new head golf coach

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — Patrick Henry Community College welcomes former PGA Tour Canada member and Bassett High School graduate, Blake Carter, as the college's new head golf coach.

Carter received his Bachelor's in Political Science from Longwood University where he was also a four-year letter winner on the university's golf team. After graduating, he spent a year on the PGA Canada Tour.

“I'm very excited to get the season started at PHCC," says Carter. I know Robert started this team about four years ago and I've seen where they've gotten - winning a regional championship and competing in the nationals. I want to continue that trajectory."

Only one year after he started the program, the team's former coach Robert Weinerth lead the Patriots to the 2015 Region X Championship and to the 2015 NJCAA National Tournament where they placed 12th in the nation. Weinerth also coached the team's first All-America Team member, Daniel Rudolfsson. Weinerth resigned this May near the end of his fifth season.

“We’re excited to have Blake join our athletics program and lead our golf team,” said PHCC athletic director Brian Henderson. “With his experience at Longwood and the PGA Tour as a player, he has a wealth of knowledge to pass on to his student-athletes. We have high hopes that under Blake's leadership, our golfers will reach a high level of competitive success.”

The golf season begins this fall. To join the program or get more information, please contact Athletic Director, Brian Henderson at bhenderson@patrickhenry.edu or 276-656-0313.
