Martinsville residents will have the opportunity to decide this November whether to approve a new 1% local sales tax dedicated to school construction and facility improvements.
During a recent meeting, the Martinsville City Council voted to place the proposed tax on the November ballot, allowing voters to make the final decision.
If approved, the additional sales tax revenue would be restricted to capital projects for the city's public schools.
That includes building new facilities, renovating existing schools, and funding major infrastructure improvements.
The money could not be used for teacher salaries, employee raises, or other day-to-day operating expenses.
According to the proposal, the tax would remain in effect through 2046, providing a long-term funding source for future school facility needs.
Martinsville voters will have the final say when the measure appears on the ballot during the November election.
