Man airlifted to hospital after being trapped under a vehicle in Bassett

BASSETT, VA – A man was flown to the hospital after being trapped under a vehicle that rolled on top of him.

The private property incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on Sunday at 990 Sunset Drive in Bassett.

He was facing away from the house. He went to pull forward. He was going to attempt to turn around and point the vehicle towards the house. He went to back up, breaks gave out. They definitely gave out,” State Police Trooper M.L. Gravely told BTW21 News at the scene.

The silver Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled down a steep hill next to the home.

He starts to go down the hill, he tries to jump out. You can see his sandals down there where he tries to jump out. He jumps out, pulls him underneath and then it continues to make a circle back,” Trooper Gravely said.

The 29-year-old man was transported by rescue squad to a landing zone that was set up at the Bassett Volunteer Fire Department.

“They had him stable. I think he will be okay in the long run. He's probably going to have some crash injuries more than likely,” Gravely stated.

The Bassett Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Henry County Department of Public Safety, and the Henry County Sheriff's Office also responded.
