MARTINSVILLE – Wednesday, a Peace Officers' Memorial Service was held in the Martinsville City Chambers.
The ceremony commemorates National Police Week, which honors those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
"I rise this morning surrounded by my fellow members of law enforcement agencies to express the sorrow and grief of the ultimate sacrifice that your famity members paid protecting our citizens and community,“ Martinsville Sheriff Steve Draper said.
The names of Martinsville, Henry County and Virginia State Police law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty were read during the memorial service.
“Our community now comes together in a time of grief, mourning with you, the family members here, of the loss of your family members and all of our fallen heroes," Sheriff Draper added.
