Law enforcement, first responders called to multiple crashes due to winter storm

Pickup truck crashes on Murray Hill Lane Thursday morning

Law enforcement and first responders across Virginia are responding to multiple crashes related to the winter weather this Thursday morning.

In Henry County, a man was uninjured after the GMC truck he was driving ran off Murray Hill Lane shortly after 9:30 a.m.

A second man was not hurt after a pickup truck crashed in the Fieldale community of the county. This one took place around 12:15 p.m. when a Chevrolet went off River Road and hit a tree head-on.

Virginia State Police has responded to 270 traffic crashes and 165 disabled vehicles from midnight to 11 a.m. Thursday.

State police says the majority of those crashes have involved only damage to vehicles. There have been no reported fatalities during this time period.

State troopers are currently responding to 41 traffic crashes and 18 disabled or stuck vehicles across the state.

Police are still advised you to avoid travel Thursday into Friday.

If you must travel, they suggest you do the following:

  • Make sure all windows and lights are clear of snow before heading out

  • Always buckle up – driver and all passengers

  • Drive distraction free – put down the phone and coffee, and keep both hands on the wheel and eyes on the road

  • Slow speed for conditions

  • Use headlights to increase your visibility and to help other drivers see you better

  • Share the road responsibly with VDOT vehicles and other emergency vehicles
