City cautions residents about traffic detour
MARTINSVILLE, Va. – City Public Works crews, along with contractors from Cycle Systems, Inc., will be removing the steel support structure for a steam pipe that previously ran across Commonwealth Boulevard to the former Tultex plant. The steam pipe and other associated materials have already been disassembled and removed. The steel truss structure mounted to the side of the Franklin Street Railroad Bridge over Commonwealth Boulevard is the only piece that remains.
The project is expected to begin around 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 20 and is estimated to take approximately three to five hours. “Traffic will be detoured during this time and may involve use of Northside Drive, Lester, Depot, and Franklin Streets. We ask that motorists use caution while traveling through this area on Sunday morning and be prepared for a detour and possible delays,” said Assistant City Manager and Public Works Director Leon Towarnicki.
Traffic flow on this portion of Commonwealth Boulevard will have to be stopped completely for at least five to ten minutes, and possibly longer, while the larger pieces of the support structure are brought down.
