Historical Center leader tapped for
2010 Jack Dalton Community Service Award
Pat Ross, whose hard work helps put many people in touch with their past, is the 2010 recipient of the Jack Dalton Community Service Award.
Ross is the Branch Manager for the Bassett Historical Center, which is part of the Blue Ridge Library System. The Bassett Historical Center is the repository for all genealogical research and local history for the counties of Henry and Patrick and the City of Martinsville.
Patrons have come from 50 states and nine foreign countries to view the 9,500 family files and 3,000 local history files that are housed at the Center. Ross works diligently on meeting the patrons’ needs, and played a major role in the re-opening of the Center after extensive facility renovations.
“People from all over the map come to the Bassett Historical Center to literally find out who they are,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Debra Buchanan. “Pat Ross and the Center serve as the link which allows that to happen. In addition to those duties, no one worked harder on the Center and its expansion than Pat Ross. We are thrilled to select her as the 2010 Jack Dalton winner.”
The Jack Dalton Community Service Award annually goes to the Henry County resident who best demonstrates the exemplary community service that marked Dalton’s years of public service. Dalton served as a member of the Henry County Board of Supervisors for more than 24 years, and was serving as the Board Chairman at the time of his death on May 24, 2000.
Nominations for the Jack Dalton Award were solicited from community residents through local media and the Henry County website, www.henrycountyva.gov. Nominations were based on the candidate’s personal efforts and active involvement in helping promote the quality of life in Henry County.
Ross is the 10th recipient of the award. Previous recipients of the honor include Dr. Calvin Rains, Bill Adkins, Clay Campbell, Mary McGee, Charles Bradshaw, Bob Petty, the Rev. Thurman Echols, Nancy Bradshaw, and Mary Jordan. |
