Danville native Peyton Sellers completed his first 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series race last weekend and came home with a solid 26th-place finish in the O’Reilly 300 at Texas Motor Speedway.
The #77 SFP Chevrolet was forced to go to their backup car to qualify for the race due to a wreck in practice. Sellers still managed to qualify 23rd among 49 drivers, with an average speed of 183.187 mph on the 1.5 mile track.
Texas is an impound race, which gave the team no opportunity to make changes to the backup car before the start. It was apparent from the drop of the green flag that the car needed adjustments.
“I just can’t charge the corners like I need to”, said Sellers over the radio. "The thing is wicked loose on entry.”
Despite handling issues Sellers managed to keep the car out of trouble for the duration of the race, and was running as high as 21st. “We came loaded for bear”, said team owner Will Spencer. “We had some adversity, and we overcame it. We left the track with a solid performance and a clean run all day. That’s a successful first race in my book.
"They knew we were there.”
The team’s next race with primary sponsor SFP is scheduled for May 1st in Richmond.
