To say Kyle Busch is a busy guy this racing season would be a huge understatement.
After all, Busch has competed in EVERY race in NASCAR's top-three divisions thus far in 2009 - Sprint Cup, Nationwide and the Camping World Truck Series. His second Cup win and fifth overall victory of 2009 in last week's Bristol race moved the 23-year-old Las Vegas native one step closer to a record that is quickly approaching.
Jeff Gordon holds the record for most Sprint Cup victories before the age of 25 with 15 wins. Busch, who doesn't turn 25 until May 10, 2010, is now just one victory from tying Gordon and two from passing the four-time Cup champion's mark.
Busch says breaking the record would be huge.
"When you talk about Jeff Gordon, you're talking about one of the best, so it's a tremendous honor and priviledge to even be close to breaking one of his records," Busch said Friday morning during an interview in the infield media center at Martinsville Speedway.
"Luckily, I've gotten involved with quality teams and great owners and crews ever since I started racing in Cup," said the driver of the No. 18 M&M's Toyota Camry for Joe Gibbs Racing. "That makes my job a whole lot easier and it's definitely the reason why I've racked up a few wins already."
This week, in addition to trying to match Gordon's record, Busch will attempt to conquer a track that has so far eluded him in his young career.
Busch has four top-10 finishes in eight Cup starts at the .526-mile track, including a pair of fourth-place efforts in 2007. He says there are several key areas his team's focusing on as they vie for their third win of the season.
"We've always qualified pretty well here and that helps because you get a better pit stall and that helps you get on and off of pit road as soon as possible," Busch said. "So qualifying good here is key."
Busch's last two qualifying efforts at Martinsville have earned him the sixth and eighth spots on the starting grid. Thanks to Friday's rainout of qualifying, Busch will start fourth.
Busch also said that flawless pit stops, a good brake package and driving smart will help him get to Martinsville's Victory Lane.
