Volunteers pitch in to help keep the City clean
MARTINSVILLE, Va. – City Council recently passed a proclamation declaring the week of June 9 through 14 as “City-Wide Cleanup Week.” In support of this initiative, the Martinsville Police Department’s Community Oriented Policing Division and Community Watch Committees from the Southside area committed to organizing two clean-up events to take place in the community each year.
The second one of those campaigns for 2008 took place on Saturday, November 1. Officer Coretha A. Gravely of the Martinsville Police Department, along with Neighborhood Watch captains and residents of Starling Avenue, Forest, Chalmers, Emmette, and Carter Streets participated. Together the group collected eight bags of garbage from the roadsides and public rights-of-way.
“We really appreciate the effort put worth on this project. Our residents always answer the call and do what it takes to get the job done,” said MPD Sergeant Marshall Farley.
After the cleanup, volunteers were treated to a hot dog lunch at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church on Starling Avenue.
The organizers of the event wish to give special thanks to all those who participated and to Wesley Memorial Church for their role as a staging location and for hosting the meal afterwards. |
