Arrest Made, Weapon Recovered After Pursuit

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Martinsville Police arrested an 18-year-old local man after a brief vehicle and foot pursuit late Tuesday night.
MPD Officer J. D. Purvis initiated a traffic stop on a blue Ford F-150 pick-up for failing to stop before making a right turn at a red light at the intersection of Fayette Street and Memorial Boulevard at approximately 11:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 19. Officer Purvis activated his emergency lights and the driver of the pick-up truck accelerated to a high rate of speed, traveling west on Fayette Street.
The driver then attempted to make a left turn onto Third Street and lost control of the vehicle striking a tree in the front yard of a residence at 207 Third Street. As he attempted to back-up the perpetrator struck a parked car before proceeding north toward Fayette Street. The driver lost control of the vehicle again and struck a utility pole while attempting to turn back onto Fayette Street.
The driver then fled on foot and was pursued approximately 100 yards before he was taken into custody, without further incident, by Officer J. D. Purvis in a wooded area just off of North Street. The driver was identified as Carlos Demontae Spencer, age 18, of 709 Fourth Street in Martinsville.
Officer Purvis found a handgun in the area near where Spencer was taken into custody. Spencer stated that the gun belonged to him and that he was trying to get rid of it.
Carlos Demontae Spencer was charged with Felony-Eluding Police, Misdemeanor-Hit and Run, and Misdemeanor-Possession of Concealed Weapon. He was released after posting a $1,000 secured bond.
Damage estimates are as follows: $10,000 on Spencer’s (perpetrator) pick-up truck, $1,000 on a parked car, and $50 on a tree at 207 Third Street.
